Life Lessons: Writing for A Purpose 10-Week Workshop Series
TAKE ACTION! Publishing piloted a 10-week writing workshop series with adults in recovery from substance abuse at A Step Forward, Inc. (ASF) in Baltimore, MD. The workshops ran from August 2008 - October 2008 and were held on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.
TAKE ACTION! Publishing worked in partnership with Soulcial Solutions (http://www.soulcialsolutions.com/), A Step Forward, Inc. (http://www.takeastepforward.org/), and local writers to conduct the workshops. TAKE ACTION! donated its staff time pro bono to facilitate the workshops. Soulcial Solutions purchased the selected text for the workshop. Local authors gave of their time and talent pro bono to share writing tips and techniques.
Throughout the 10-week course, ASF participants had opportunities to (1) use writing as a therapeutic tool in their recovery; and (2) share their life stories. In addition to meeting local authors, ASF participants learned a variety of writing skills, including techniques for writing poetry and creative essays.
